Safety Mode on YouTube… Do you have it on?

May 23, 2012

I have an 8 year old son that is obsessed with You Tube. He is always watching videos when he gets online. I’ve been on You Tube enough to know that there is some pretty risky stuff available to his finger tips. I try to monitor the best I can, but I’ll occasionally hear a few choice words that I don’t approve of. It generally makes me hesitant to have him spend time on the site.

Until just recently I had no idea that there is a Safety Mode available on You Tube. Safety Mode gives users the option to choose not to see mature content that they may find find offensive. It’s easy to add onto your settings, but has to be done in all browsers on your computer.

The Safety Mode is not 100% full proof and doesn’t work on mobile devices. However, I still think the added safety is something any parent can be thankful for.

Here is a screen shot of where you can turn on your Safety Mode. It’s just located at the bottom of your screen. (click on picture to see bigger)

Here is a link to the You Tube main page that talks about the Safety Mode. It has FAQ’s and a tutorial, which you may find helpful.

Do you have kids that use You Tube? Do you have your Safety Mode on? If not, I think you should!
